Larry Newsum, a nationally
recognized glass artist,
has been blowing glass and evolving his style
for over twenty years.
For the past fifteen years he has been working in his studio at
Sky Ranch in the mountains between Cambria and Big Sur
on the
beautiful Central Coast of California.
Larry, and his devoted crew of highly-skilled assistants,
employ the techniques of the old
masters and new ones of their
own to produce blown glass pieces that
express the
sensibilities of today while honoring the rich
glass-blowing heritage of the past.

Mike Worcester in the Studio

Mike
Worcester is one of the principal glassblowers at Larry
Newsum Studios.
The pieces Larry executes require the assistance of a small
team of glassblowers
numbering up to four individuals, each with a specific
set of tasks that
must be performed. Mike works closely with the master
gaffer
(head craftsman on team) to create these works.
Mike has been
closely associated with glass his entire life
- both of his parents are
glass artists.

The work performed at Larry Newsum Studios
requires strenuous effort, at dangerously close to extreme
temperatures
(often over 2,400 degrees F). Working as a team, each
person
has to perform with precision and a deft touch, being
especially
careful not to burn the others to death,
or give them a serious owie,
anyway.
The working of hot glass begins with a furnace, 'the tank', holding
several hundred
pounds of molten glass. About the consistency of honey,
the glass is picked
up, or 'gathered', on a hollow steel blowpipe,
and manipulated while still
soft into the forms desired.
It can be made to take virtually any form,
literally an infinite
number of possible shapes. That's why Larry says it's
so hard to
get the exact one you want.
Using
a few simple tools and the heat from a secondary
furnace
each piece is coaxed from the amorphous blob of glowing heat.
The work is taxing, both mentally and physically. It gets HOT!
The primary
function of one team member may be to act as a heat
shield to protect the
gaffer (the one who wields the pipe)
It is
through the combined talents of this team that the
larger of
Larry's works are created. The pieces are designed and
manufactured
entirely by hand, and in extremely limited editions,
each
one finished, signed and dated by Larry Newsum.

"I love glass, I'm still out there in the shop all day,
dreaming up the next piece. We really put a lot of care
into the work we
produce and I hope it shows"-Larry

Roger Overstreet occasionally stands
around watching
Larry work in the Studio. He even hands things to Larry as
he blows
glass. Roger is responsible for this website, the design and the graphics.
And yes, he does like referring to himself in the third
person.
